Watertaxi in Rotterdam waiting for passengers at dock

5G PTT for maritime communication

Watertaxi Rotterdam operates 20 boats in and around Rotterdam, with 120 skippers connected to a central control room. To manage communication more effectively in this busy environment, the company uses GroupTalk Push-to-Talk with a central dispatcher, professional radio devices (based on smartphone technology and public 4G/5G mobile networks) and emergency communication, making it easier to structure and prioritise incoming communication.

Previously, all skippers communicated through the same channel, which meant that several messages could reach the central operator at the same time. With GroupTalk, incoming calls are managed through the central dispatcher and placed in a queue, making it easier to handle communication in order and according to priority.

GroupTalk connects the skippers with the central control room (PC dispatch) through professional 5G push-to-talk devices. This gives skippers a dedicated way to communicate with the dispatcher while keeping their focus on navigating and transporting passengers.

Emergency communication for safer transport

The solution includes an emergency button that allows skippers to immediately alert the central operator without having to start a voice call. This provides a simple way to raise an urgent alert while operating the boat.

By managing communication through the GroupTalk dispatcher, the central team gets a clearer overview of incoming calls. Communication can be handled in a structured order, reducing unnecessary interruptions and making it easier to prioritise requests.

Watertaxi Rotterdam operates in a busy environment where skippers navigate waterways, transport passengers and communicate with harbour services and other vessels. More structured communication helps skippers stay focused on their primary task while keeping them connected to the central control room.

The solution was implemented by Flash Private Mobile Networks, combining GroupTalk with professional communication equipment and network prioritisation.
